In this method, we perform a special experiment by combining two methods:

  1. Grafting Technique

  2. Natural Dye Infusion Method

This method is not only more successful but also completely natural to get black shades.

Step 1: Start by grafting

Grafting is a scientific process in which a new plant is produced by joining parts of two plants.

You need:

  • A healthy rose plant (rooted stock).

  • Stem of a dark rose (dark red/purple).

  • Clean grafting knife.

  • Rubber tape or grafting tape.

Process:

  1. Cut the top 4-5 inches of the stock plant.

  2. Cut the bottom of the scion (dark rose stem) into a V shape.

  3. Make a V cut in the stock and fit the scion into it.

  4. Tie it properly with tape and keep it in the shade.

Step 2: Black effect from natural color

Once grafting is successful (in about 3-4 weeks), you can use the natural dye technique for the black effect.

Material:

  • Beetroot juice or black rice water

  • Light coffee powder

  • Water-soluble iron solution (optional)

Process:

  1. Prepare a solution by mixing beetroot juice and black rice water.

  2. Water the rose plant with this mixture for 1 week.

  3. Gradually, the petals of the flower start becoming deeper.

Some tips from my personal experience

I tried this technique during the lockdown. Initially, I faced some problems like –

  • The grafting was not set properly.

  • Due to the excessive use of dye, the leaves turned yellow.

But after trying again, when I used balanced dye and maintained light moisture with polythene after grafting, the results were excellent.

Within 6 weeks, the plant produced dark red flowers that looked almost black!

Essential care and tips

Growing black roses takes some effort, but these tips can help:

  • Light: Light morning sun and afternoon shade are best.

  • Soil: Use loamy soil with good drainage.

  • Fertilizer: Increase nutrition with vermicompost and bonemeal.

  • Cutting: Remove dry leaves and weak branches from time to time.

  • Pest Control: Spray Neem oil once a week.
